Mapping population decline in Khevsureti
Ryan Sherman of Cornell University recently produced these heat maps of population decline in Khevsureti based upon the figures available from a variety of censuses (Russian imperial, Soviet, post-Soviet). They offer a fascinating insight into how the region's population has shrunk—by a staggering 91%—from c. 4,500 souls in 1876 (Radde) to a mere c. 400 in 2014 (Georgian government census). Sherman's heat maps are followed by a pair of graphs showing population decline 1. between censuses, and 2. at an annual rate.
